Tanzania Safari Packing Checklist

Packing light is essential for a smooth Tanzania safari. Soft travel bags are recommended over hard-shell suitcases, especially for small aircraft transfers and safari vehicles. Choose casual, comfortable clothing in natural safari colors such as beige, grey, olive, khaki, and brown—these blend well into nature and avoid attracting unnecessary attention from wildlife. Bright or neon colors can scare animals, while dark blue and black attract tsetse flies, which can leave itchy bites.

A sun hat or cap is a must to shield yourself from the strong African sun. During the wet season or in highland areas like Ngorongoro, temperatures drop significantly, so bring a warm fleece or jacket. Comfortable walking shoes are essential for short nature walks, and lighter footwear such as sandals or flip-flops are perfect for relaxing at the lodge. Women visiting coastal towns should opt for modest clothing, while swimwear is acceptable around beaches, pools, and coastal hotels.

Don’t forget key personal items such as sunglasses, mosquito repellent, sunscreen, personal medications, and hygiene essentials. Most camps and lodges offer complimentary laundry services, allowing you to pack even lighter.
