The 6 Days Umbwe Route is the most challenging and steepest route on Mount Kilimanjaro. Known for its dramatic scenery, remote wilderness, and rapid ascent profile, the Umbwe Route is best suited for experienced hikers seeking a demanding adventure to the Roof of Africa. The route approaches Kilimanjaro from the southern side and joins the Machame Route at Barranco Camp before continuing to the summit via Barafu Camp and descending through the Mweka Route. Due to its steep ascent and limited acclimatization time, it is recommended for fit climbers with previous high-altitude trekking experience.

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Moshi – Umbwe Gate – Umbwe Cave Camp

Elevation: 1,600 m to 2,850 m
Distance: 10–11 km
Hiking Time: 5–7 Hours
Habitat: Montane Forest

After breakfast, depart Moshi and drive to Umbwe Gate for registration. Begin your climb through dense rainforest, following a steep and narrow trail that winds between the Umbwe and Lonzo Rivers.

The route climbs steadily through lush vegetation, giant trees, and moss-covered forest before reaching Umbwe Cave Camp, your first overnight stop on the mountain.

Day 2: Umbwe Cave Camp – Barranco Camp

Elevation: 2,850 m to 3,950 m
Distance: 6 km
Hiking Time: 4–5 Hours
Habitat: Heath & Moorland

Leave the forest behind as the landscape opens into giant heather and moorland. The trail becomes steeper and more rugged, offering spectacular views of the Great Barranco Valley and the Western Breach.

Arrive at Barranco Camp, one of the most scenic camps on Kilimanjaro, located beneath the towering Barranco Wall.

Day 3: Barranco Camp – Karanga Camp

Elevation: 3,950 m to 3,995 m

Begin the day by climbing the famous Barranco Wall, a thrilling but non-technical scramble that rewards climbers with breathtaking views.

After reaching the top, continue through valleys and ridges before arriving at Karanga Camp. This shorter day assists with acclimatization and prepares you for higher elevations.

Day 4: Karanga Camp – Barafu Camp

Elevation: 3,995 m to 4,673 m
Distance: 4 km
Hiking Time: 3–4 Hours

Today’s trek is relatively short but takes you into the harsh alpine desert zone. The landscape becomes increasingly barren as you approach Barafu Camp, the base camp for your summit attempt.

Arrive in the afternoon, enjoy an early dinner, and rest before your midnight ascent to Uhuru Peak.

Day 5: Barafu Camp – Uhuru Peak – Mweka Camp

Elevation: 4,673 m to 5,895 m then descend to 3,100 m
Distance: 17 km
Hiking Time: 11–15 Hours
Habitat: Arctic → Moorland

Shortly after midnight, begin the summit push. Trek slowly through the darkness toward Stella Point (5,756 m) before continuing along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m).

Reach the summit at sunrise and celebrate your achievement at the highest point in Africa.

After photographs and a short rest, descend to Barafu Camp before continuing down to Mweka Camp for your final night on the mountain.

Day 6: Mweka Camp – Mweka Gate – Moshi

Elevation: 3,100 m to 1,640 m
Distance: 10 km
Hiking Time: 3–5 Hours

After breakfast, continue descending through the beautiful rainforest zone. The trail passes through lush vegetation filled with birds and unique plant species before reaching Mweka Gate.

Receive your official summit certificate and meet your driver for the transfer back to Moshi, where a hot shower and celebration await.
