About Tanzania

Tanzania

kilimanjaro___
Mount Kilimanjaro

Tanzania officially the United Republic of Tanzania (Swahili: Jamhuri ya Muungano wa Tanzania), is a country in East Africa within the African Great Lakes region. It borders Uganda to the north; Kenya to the northeast; Comoro Islands and the Indian Ocean to the east; Mozambique and Malawi to the south; Zambia to the southwest; and Rwanda, Burundi, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo to the west. Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest mountain, is in northeastern Tanzania.

Tanzania is home to many of the best and biggest parks in Africa, and some of the most varied and unique landscapes that you’ll ever see. From grasslands to woodlands, rock formations, and mountain peaks.

Tanzania is mountainous and densely forested in the north-east, where Mount Kilimanjaro is located. Three of Africa’s Great Lakes are partly within Tanzania. To the north and west lie Lake Victoria, Africa’s largest lake, and Lake Tanganyika, the continent’s deepest lake, known for its unique species of fish. To the south lies Lake Malawi. The eastern shore is hot and humid, with the Zanzibar Archipelago just offshore. The Menai Bay Conservation Area is Zanzibar’s largest marine protected area.

The north is also home to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The Ngorongoro Conservation Area includes the Ngorongoro Crater, which is an extinct volcanic caldera with lions, hippopotamus, elephants, various types of antelope, the endangered black rhinoceros, and large herds of wildebeest and zebra. Olduvai Gorge, considered being the seat of humanity after the discovery of the earliest known specimens of the human genus, Homo habilis as well as early hominidae, such as Paranthropus boisei also lies within the conservation area.

Why Tanzania Safari is Important?

Tanzania has almost 38% of its land reserved as protected areas, one of the world’s highest percentages. Tanzania boasts 16 national parks and is home to a large variety of animal life. Among the large mammals include the Big five, cheetahs, wildebeest, giraffes, hippopotamuses and various antelopes. Tanzania’s most well known wildlife attractions are located in the northern part of the country and include the Serengeti National Park, Tarangire National Park and Lake Manyara National Park. The Serengeti National park encompasses the world-famous great migrations of animals. The Serengeti National Park is the most popular park in the country and had the chance to host more than 330,000 visitors in 2012.

Home to the Great Wildebeest Migration, each year, Tanzania sees millions of animals make their way across the land in search of water and fresh pasture. Wildebeest, zebra, and gazelle make the arduous journey, and brave the raging Mara River, filled with waiting crocodiles.

If you’re curious about what this beautiful country has to offer, here’s a look at ten reasons it’s regarded as one of the best safari destinations in Africa.

Ngorongoro

The UNESCO World Heritage site, the Ngorongoro Crater, is universally acclaimed as one of the natural wonders of the world. It is an intact caldera containing a microcosm of African wildlife. Breathtaking views of the crater and surrounding highlands from the rim are stunning. The crater covers about 260 sq. km of the 8300 sq. km protected area. The crater itself is a magical scene that contains abundant and unusually docile wildlife, with large numbers of mammals, especially grazers. Down on the crater floor, over 25,000 wild creatures live a fishbowl existence in a setting of almost sublime beauty. Spread over treeless pastures, animals saunter by in glorious, unobstructed views. The crater has its mighty bull elephants, dour-faced buffalo, beleaguered rhinoceros, portly hippos, lions galore, even a sparkling, flamingo-thronged soda lake. Everything is enclosed within the velvety green walls of a perfect volcanic bowl and therefore contains a high percentage of predators. In this mile-high caldera, where the mountain air is fresh and cool, billowing cumulus clouds dip close enough to touch the crater rim, enveloping Ngorongoro in a misty world of its own.
